Madeira has flashier trails than the Vereda do Larano, but few hand you this much coastline for so little effort. It traces the island’s rugged north-east, linking the old fishing town of Machico with the surf village of Porto da Cruz. For long stretches, you walk a narrow path cut into the cliff, with the Atlantic a few hundred metres below and very little between you and the drop. Locals used this route for generations before the roads arrived. Today, it\u2019s one of the calmer coastal walks on the island, which is a good part of the appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vereda do Larano hiking route: Machico to Porto da Cruz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The classic walk runs point to point and links two connected paths. You start in the upper part of Machico<\/a>, near the old tunnel to Cani\u00e7al, and follow the Levada do Cani\u00e7al inland for about five kilometres. At a junction called Boca do Risco, the coastal Vereda do Larano begins, carrying you along the cliffs down to Porto da Cruz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole route is roughly 13 kilometres point to point, and most people take three to five hours depending on pace and photo stops. You can also do a shorter out-and-back of around 10 kilometres from the Porto da Cruz side if you would rather not sort transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the full version does not loop, plan your return. Both towns sit on local bus routes, and a taxi or Bolt between them is cheap, often about 10 euros. Some walkers simply leave a second car at the far end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coastal views along the Vereda do Larano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The views are the reason to come. For the first stretch along the levada the path runs inland through farmland and laurel, and you barely sense the sea. Then the trees fall away at Boca do Risco and the coastline opens up ahead. From here the trail hugs the cliff edge, several hundred metres above the water, for several kilometres, passing a small waterfall along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look east and you can pick out the S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o peninsula, the thin finger of rock that forms the island’s tip. That stretch is a fine walk in its own right, the PR8 Vereda da Ponta de S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o<\/a>, and a good contrast to save for later. Closer to Porto da Cruz, the great hump of Penha d’\u00c1guia, or Eagle Rock, dominates the view. On a clear day you can make out Porto Santo far out to sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vereda do Larano difficulty, distance and terrain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Vereda do Larano is an easy to moderate walk rather than a serious mountain hike. There is little sustained climbing, and the total ascent is around 250 metres across the full route. The surface is mostly a firm earthen footpath, with rocky patches and short muddy stretches after rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes it feel harder than the numbers suggest is exposure. Parts of the cliff path are narrow, and several have no guardrail above a sheer drop. The path is wide enough to feel secure for most people, but anyone with a real fear of heights should think carefully. Sure-footed children of around eight and over usually manage it well. No permit or fee is needed, which is not true of every trail on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
