There’s a moment at the Achadas da Cruz cable car station when most people stop talking. You’re in a quiet farming village on Madeira’s north-west coast, and then you look over the railing at the cabin disappearing down something closer to a wall than a hillside. The Miradouro do Telef\u00e9rico das Achadas da Cruz is the viewpoint built around that moment: a clifftop platform in the parish of Achadas da Cruz, part of Porto Moniz, where a small cable car drops passengers around 450 metres to a strip of farmland at sea level. It doesn’t get the crowds Cabo Gir\u00e3o does, which is part of why it’s worth the detour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The telef\u00e9rico Achadas da Cruz connects the village above to Faj\u00e3 da Quebrada Nova below; the ride takes about five minutes each way in one of two small cabins, each holding around six people, one descending as the other climbs. At close to 98%, the gradient is steep enough that the ride needs no exaggeration. For context, the world’s steepest cable car is currently Switzerland’s Schilthornbahn, which opened in December 2024 with a gradient of 159.4%, so Achadas da Cruz isn’t chasing that title, just delivering a memorably vertical few minutes on a much smaller scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was built for farmers, not tourists. Before it existed, anyone working the faj\u00e3 below carried tools and crops up a steep cliffside path on foot. It still does that job today: you’re as likely to share the queue with someone checking on their vines as with another visitor. There’s no scripted commentary and no gift shop, just a ticket booth and a snack bar, the view needing no extra help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the platform, before boarding a cabin, you get a clear view down the cliff line towards the Atlantic. On a clear day, the coastline curls west towards Ponta do Pargo and east past Porto Moniz. It’s a rawer, quieter version of Miradouro do Cabo Gir\u00e3o<\/a> on the south coast, without the coach parties, and the cable car running below adds a sense of scale a static platform can’t match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Midday flattens the cliffs into one shade of green-brown; early morning or late afternoon brings out the layered rock and the fields below.
